Bark Splitting or Trunk Cracks
When lightning strikes a tree’s trunk, it can travel through it in one of three ways:
- Through the center
- Through the inner bark

If struck through the center, the tree’s central sap superheats, and the water in it quickly turns into steam. This causes the tree to blow up from the inside out, leading to catastrophic damage from which it often cannot recover.
If struck through the inner bark, the moisture expansion may cause deep cracks along the tree trunk. However, the trunk may not be destroyed, and it could be sturdy enough to stand. It may be able to survive with thorough care.
If struck through the outer bark, you may only see some superficial burn marks. There is substantially less moisture in the outer bark than in the inner and central parts. Aside from careful monitoring to prevent pest and fungal infestations, it may not need additional help.
Wilting Foliage
Lightning can also strike a tree in two other ways: through the canopy and through the roots. Between these, the canopy is somewhat preferable.
